2013 Democracy Award

The Endowment honored three outstanding young people who are working in extraordinarily challenging environments to create a democratic future in their respective countries. NED also made a posthumous award to a fourth young democrat whose life was cut short in the midst of his struggle.

A Celebration of the Life of Amb. Mark Palmer

Ambassador Mark Palmer, who served as US Ambassador to Hungary from 1986-1990 and as a speechwriter to three Presidents, played a leading role in drafting President Ronald Reagan’s historic Westminster Address to the British Parliament, in which Reagan proposed the initiative that led to the establishment of NED. In addition, Palmer served on the NED Board of Directors from 1990-1999.

They examined the current challenges to human rights and good governance in the DRC, their effect on instability in Congo, and options to address the eastern Congo crisis.
