The grantee will fact-check data released by the government and publish a series of briefs analyzing the accuracy of public statements and publications. The grantee will also produce thematic reports summarizing its fact-checking analyses on timely topics related to good governance.

Human Rights Memorial Project

Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran

Supplement $24,000

To promote human rights and democracy education, discourse and advocacy. The organization will monitor and document human rights violations, publicly disseminate its findings, and advocate for greater accountability to international treaty obligations as well as for victims of human rights violations. The grantee will also expand its human rights database and online documentation initiatives, and strengthen civil society-led advocacy efforts at the United Nations and other international fora.

The grantee will work closely with human rights defenders to build their reporting and advocacy skills, and will share its monitoring findings with the United Nations and international human rights organizations.

To raise awareness about and monitor human rights violations and to enhance communication security and information access for human rights activists. The project will publish and distribute a monthly report on human rights violations, expand its online database and compile related data. It will also provide technical assistance in the fields of communication and online security.

Publication of a Legal Journal

To raise awareness through debates among lawyers and civil society actors about the rule of law and fundamental rights and to strengthen a network of democratic jurists and human rights defenders. The project will publish and distribute electronically a law journal to serve as a resource for lawyers, law students, and clerics.

Strengthening Environmental Accountability

To promote environmental accountability and transparency. The organization will raise awareness of environmental challenges and offer policy and scientific solutions to address them. The project will work with media organizations to elevate the issue in public debate, advocate for greater environmental accountability and strengthen civil society’s ability to understand the root causes of environmental issues.

Strengthening Independent Journalism

To strengthen independent professional journalism and promote networking among media professionals. The organization will maintain and further develop an online resource center for journalists and media professionals. The grantee will publish on its website news and updates relevant to journalists, and will monitor and document violations against journalists.

Strengthening Independent Labor Unions

To strengthen independent labor unions and to enhance workers’ knowledge of and advocacy for their legal rights. The organization will design and implement a training program to help workers understand labor laws and collectively advocate for their rights. The organization will create an online platform to provide information and resources for workers and will develop a strategy to advocate with international human rights and labor organizations to promote labor rights.

Supporting Citizen-Led Accountability during Electoral and Legislative Processes

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI)

To strengthen the capacity of Iranian activists to use electoral processes as mechanisms for promoting greater accountability. The institute will support and mentor networks and members of the diaspora community to promote accountability efforts in the post-2020 parliamentary election period and ahead of the 2021 local and presidential elections. By tracking candidate promises, monitoring electoral and legislative processes, and advocating on behalf of fundamental political rights, the institute’s networks and diaspora partners will create cultures of accountability and civic oversight around elections in Iran.
