In July, 2010, 87 official delegations and more than 200 civil society activists from around the world gathered in Krakow, Poland to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Community of Democracies (CD), recommit to the principles of its Warsaw Declaration, and to discuss improving and expanding its work. Attendees included US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Polish Solidarity leader Lech Wałesa.
By assisting the CD’s International Steering Committee and Permanent Secretariat, and covering travel costs to Krakow, NED was able to significantly increase the civil society representation at the event:

The efforts of the World Movement for Democracy in Defending Civil Society received an important boost from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she used a keynote speech to focus on the importance of civil society in advancing democracy, and on the growing challenges posed by restrictive legal environments.
