Reconsidering Democratic Transitions: The Arab Spring and the Color Revolutions
A Conference Series by the International Forum for Democratic Studies
The recent uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa represent the most important development for democracy since the fall of Soviet communism.
In Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya, the extent of challenges to implementing democratic reform has become clearer in the two years since the Arab Spring. Meanwhile, Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan represent the most relevant examples of democratic reform in former Soviet Eurasia. Despite their flaws and regressions, these three countries are outliers relative to the Eurasian authoritarian standard and therefore remain important in the democracy context for a number of reasons, including the power of demonstration effects.
The Forum is undertaking a roundtable series on “Reconsidering Democratic Transitions: The Arab Spring and Color Revolutions” to sharpen assumptions about key transition developments and analyze critical factors for achieving democratic progress in six case studies:
The series also considers the role of international actors in shaping the regional contexts for democratic transitions.
