WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) celebrates the lasting promise of freedom and stands with people around the world working to secure their fundamental rights and shape their own futures.

America’s founding gave powerful expression to a universal idea: that every person possesses inherent dignity and rights, and that government derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed. Over the past 250 years, these principles have inspired generations of people in the United States and across the world to pursue liberty, justice, and self-government.

“Our nation’s 250th anniversary reminds us that America’s strength has always rested on the enduring appeal of the principles at the heart of our founding,” said Damon Wilson, president and CEO of the National Endowment for Democracy. “These principles are reflected every day in the courage of citizens around the world who speak freely, organize their communities, defend their faith, report the truth, and work to build governments accountable to the people. NED is proud to stand with them.”

In his 1982 Westminster Address, President Ronald Reagan called on democracies to strengthen the institutions and civic foundations that allow freedom to endure. Congress responded by creating NED as an independent, nonpartisan institution that works openly with people pursuing democratic aspirations in their own countries. For more than four decades, NED has worked to advance freedom through peaceful and democratic means and supports efforts to help build societies that are more accountable, stable, prosperous, and resilient.

“Supporting those who advance liberty reflects the best of America’s character and serves our country’s interests,” said Peter Roskam, chair of NED’s Board of Directors. “Free societies make stronger partners, foster fairer economic opportunity, and contribute to a safer and more stable world. As Americans commemorate this historic anniversary, we should remain confident in the power of freedom, and steadfast in our support for those pursuing it.”

As the United States enters its next 250 years, NED reaffirms its commitment to stand with those who seek liberty, which strengthens America’s security, prosperity, and leadership while helping ensure that the promise celebrated on July 4 continues to inspire generations around the world.
