Carl Gershman, president of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and Kenneth Wollack, chairman of NED’s Board of Directors, have issued the following statement:

“NED mourns the passing of former Vice President Walter F. Mondale, who was a member of NED’s Board of Directors in 1985-86, and then chaired the board of the National Democratic Institute from 1986-93.

He believed deeply in public service, and in democratic values at home and abroad. Perhaps, most important, he was a man of great integrity and decency. The Endowment benefitted from his leadership, and his deep and abiding commitment to people throughout the world who are working to promote and defend democracy and human rights. The NED will always honor his legacy. ”
