Defending Freedom of Expression in Eastern and Southern Angola

To ensure adequate news coverage and greater freedom of expression in three provinces, the grantee will launch a website through which it will broadcast an online radio program, upload podcasts and video reports, and publish articles and opinion pieces. The grantee will also hold a community journalism training, produce a weekly talk show, and organize public conferences to discuss major governance challenges in Eastern and Southern Angola.

Enhancing the Leadership Skills of Angolan Youth

To bring public officials closer to their constituents, the grantee will train several youth leaders on a variety of leadership and communication skills. Beyond organizing numerous town hall meetings on Angola’s socioeconomic situation, the grantee will interact with like-minded youth leaders from other African countries, engage in experience-sharing activities abroad, and take part in international human rights mechanisms, for which it will produce a short documentary on challenges to democracy in Angola.

Promoting Transparency in the Management of Public Funds

To strengthen civil society’s capacity to promote transparency in the management of public funds in three critical municipalities, the grantee will first hold trainings on how to monitor the execution of public budgets, and then organize forums where stakeholders will discuss their expectations about planned state-funded projects. The grantee will document progress on the execution of these projects, and sponsor a radio program on development challenges in the targeted municipalities.

Reporting on Corruption, Human Rights Abuses, Fiscal Governance, and Elections

Maka Angola

To enhance freedom of expression, access to information, and public discourse in Angola, the grantee will strengthen its cybersecurity, continue reporting on governance and human rights issues, and provide legal opinions on proposed public administration reforms. In addition to reporting on electoral processes, the grantee will convene conferences and expand its range of investigations to cover fiscal and judicial reforms.
