The grantee will organize ten sessions to discuss the results of a report describing the environmental impact of a gold mine project. Participants will be trained to document air and water pollution. Environmental samples and results from a satellite imagery study of environmental degradation in mining communities will be used to develop an advocacy strategy to improve environmental conditions in mining communities.

Promoting Human Rights and Good Governance in the Extractives Sector

To promote human rights and good governance in the extractives sector. The organization will document human rights abuses and environmental damage in mining communities. The organization will then train residents on the government’s roles and responsibilities according to the national mining code and provide opportunities for citizens to directly engage with government officials on these topics. The organization will also train citizens on conflict prevention and resolution techniques to reduce the number of violent conflicts in mining communities. 

Promoting Justice Sector Accountability

To promote professionalism and accountability within the Guinean justice system. The organization will solicit feedback from judicial system stakeholders and design a code of conduct for federal police and prison officials to ensure they comply with Guinea’s laws on detainee rights. The organization will also provide free legal assistance to detainees experiencing prolonged pre-trial detention.

Promoting Women’s Rights in the Judicial System

To promote professionalism and accountability within the Guinean justice system. The grantee will create a booklet reviewing the laws and protections about women’s rights in the penal system. The grantee will meet with members of regional women and children’s committees to discuss strategies to enforce and implement the protections. The organization will also provide free legal assistance to 250 women. 

Promoting Youth Political Participation

To promote youth participation in local governance and peaceful elections. The organization will conduct a survey on barriers to youth political participation and share the results at a two-day conference. The organization will also host trainings on good governance, leadership, and the importance of peaceful elections. Participants will then conduct a budget monitoring exercise to practice acquired skills. The organization will distribute informational materials on the electoral process and engage in advocacy meetings to implement a 30 percent youth representation quota. 

Reinforcing Women’s Participation in Local Elections

To strengthen the capacity of Guinean women leaders to participate in the presidential elections and in local governance processes. The grantee will train 160 women, members of civil society, and journalists on the new gender parity law. The grantee will then organize three dialogues between political party leaders, civil society, and women’s organizations on the importance of women’s political participation and the gender parity law. The grantee will offer ongoing mentorship to women political aspirants and engage in advocacy with the legislature to enforce gender parity.
