Advocating for Police Reform in Nicaragua

Democratic Ideas and Values


To promote reforms to the Nicaraguan police system as part of the proposals of pro-democracy actors to democratize Nicaragua. The project will convene academics and security experts to draft a road map to reform the police system. The document will be presented to pro-democracy groups and encourage them to adopt it as part of their democratic transition plan for Nicaragua. The project will include presentations of the report and articles with its main findings to raise awareness about the topic.

Building the Capacity of Youth on Citizen Participation in Nicaragua

Civic Education


To build the capacity of Nicaraguan youth on citizen participation and civic values. Workshop sessions on issues of human rights, the environment, citizen participation, and rule of law will be organized. A guidebook will be produced and disseminated, and a virtual network will be established to connect participants with likeminded youth in Nicaragua and Latin America.

Defending the Human Rights of Marginalized Communities in Nicaragua

To promote and defend the human rights of marginalized communities in Nicaragua. The organization will carry out workshops with a diverse representation of community leaders. It will also organize a forum with independent media to build visibility on human rights issues. Finally, the organization will prepare a report that documents rights violations and present it before national and international bodies.

Documenting Cases of Violence as a Mechanism to Protect Victims of Human Rights Violations

To strengthen the documentation capacity of Nicaraguan human rights groups as a mechanism to protect victims’ rights. The organization will train members of a coalition of human rights groups to document and analyze the dynamics of violence that took place in two Nicaraguan municipalities during the height of the 2018 political crisis. With the data collected, the organization will produce reports to advocate for a process of transitional justice in Nicaragua.

Fomenting a More Informed Nicaraguan Citizenry through Objective News Reporting

To promote greater access to independent news and analysis of political, economic, and social issues to Nicaraguans. The grantee will professionalize and expand the capacity of a digital media outlet to provide daily coverage on Nicaraguan current events. The outlet will produce podcasts and multimedia reports on the effects of the COVID-19 global pandemic in Nicaragua, among other issues of national interest.

Fostering Dialogue and Consensus among Democratic Players

To strengthen the capacity of pro-democracy actors to advance a democratic transition in Nicaragua. Throgh a series of meetings and workshops, the grantee will facilitate greater dialogue and consensus building amongst pro-democracy leaders. It will help them to be more responsive and representative of the needs by fostering interaction and communication between them and citizens. Finally, it will generate greater public awareness about the benefits of a peaceful and democratic solution to the political crisis.

Informing Citizens on the Impact of Corruption and Human Rights Violations in Times of Covid-19

To promote a more informed citizenry on the effects of covid-19 on human rights violations and corruption in Central America. It will publish multimedia reports and investigative materials, which it will disseminate on social media and in partnership with other organizations to reach a broader audience.

Preserving Historical Memory and Generating Awareness on Victims of Human Rights Violations

To generate greater national and international awareness on the victims of politically motivated violence in Nicaragua. Digital content featuring the profiles of victims will be disseminated through a web platform and social media channels. Trainings will be offered to family members of victims, and a podcast series will be produced. Organizational and technical capacity building activities will be incorporated to strengthen the organization.

Promoting a Youth Agenda and Electoral Knowledge in Nicaragua

To develop and insert a youth agenda into democratic political platforms, and to increase citizen’s understanding of electoral processes and procedures. Through a series of capacity building sessions, youth will express their political priorities and craft a youth agenda which it will present to various democratic platforms.A robust electoral literacy campaign among youth and other vulnerable populations will be launched, and debates with civil society, business leaders, and candidates will be organized. 

Promoting Access to Justice and Human Rights in Nicaragua

To promote greater respect for human rights in Nicaragua. The organization will provide legal assistance to citizens facing challenges in accessing the justice system, and accompany victims of rights violations and family members to relevant institutions to help them present complaints. The organization will produce radio programs and launch an app to reach more citizens and raise domestic awareness on human rights issues.

Promoting Analysis about Nicaragua’s Prospects for a Democratic Transition

To promote greater freedom of expression and strategic thinking and analysis about Nicaragua’s prospects for a democratic transition. The grantee will produce reports analyzing the current efforts to democratize Nicaragua, the state of freedom of expression and other democracy-related topics. The grantee will consolidate a platform of digital media outlets to foster collaborative journalism and training for its members. 

Promoting Freedom of Expression in Nicaragua

To promote freedom of information through the dissemination of independent news and analysis. The project will include news programs and disseminate them on traditional and social media. The project will include a campaign to raise awareness about human rights issues and topics related to the democratization efforts in Nicaragua.

Promoting Independent Journalism and Freedom of Expression in Nicaragua

To promote greater access to uncensored information. Through various independent media outlets, the grantee will carry out investigative journalism and provide credible, independent news coverage on current events in Nicaragua. To circumvent government censorship, it will expand its production of audiovisual news content and will disseminate it on social media outlets and YouTube.

Promoting Youth Civic Engagement and Democratic Values in Nicaragua

To promote youth civic engagement and democratic values in Nicaragua. Discussions and debates with youth on civic values will be carried out. A magazine directed at youth will be produced and forums exploring democratic challenges will be organized. Youth capacity and knowledge on electoral processes and a democratic political culture will be strengthened.

Raising the Visibility of Cases of Torture in Nicaragua

To document and report on cases of torture and other human rights violations in Nicaragua. The organization will work with Nicaraguans victims of human rights violations to document their cases and provide them with psychosocial support. It will systematically monitor and report on new cases of torture. To advocate for justice for the victims and promote awareness on these issues, the project will produce and present specialized reports at international forums and disseminate educational materials.

Rebuilding the Nicaraguan Independent Media Landscape

To promote greater collaboration, safety, and cohesion among Nicaraguan independent media professionals. The grantee will support the development of joint media products and sharing of human and technical resources among journalists. The group will produce and disseminate audiovisual content for its partners’ media programs.

Strengthening Access to Information in Nicaragua

To provide Nicaraguan citizens with objective, fact-based information. Through its radio platform, the project will produce spots for a radio debate series, each accompanied by a series of in-depth thematic reports on a range of democratic consolidation and human rights issues. The project will also produce an equal amount of political humor skits to be broadcast in the radio segments. It will disseminate its radio clips via podcasts and its website.

Strengthening Democratic Values and Building the Capacity of Nicaraguan Youth

To strengthen democratic values and build a culture of dialogue and conflict resolution among Nicaraguan youth. The grantee will organize informational and awareness raising sessions for youth, and carry out capacity-building sessions on negotiation strategies and transitional justice. It will also carry out another training focused on democratic institutions, rule of law, and electoral systems, among other topics. 

Strengthening Pro-Democracy Players to Advocate for a Democratic Transition

To strengthen the capacity of pro-democracy players to advocate more effectively for a democratic transition. The project will carry out virtual forums to greater promote inclusion and representation of grassroots activists and to strengthen coordination and dialogue amongst different pro-democracy groups. In response to covid-19, it will provide humanitarian assistance to Nicaraguans most at-risk to the pandemic as well as conduct an awareness campaign to inform citizens about the crisis.

Strengthening the Leadership and Political Capacity of Nicaraguan Youth

To strengthen the leadership and political capacity of youth. The organization will offfer a capacity building series with exiled Nicaraguan youth to strengthen their understanding of human right norms and demoratic political systems. It will then organize a three-phase leadership formation program that will include site visits to political institutions and historic landmarks in Costa Rica, as well as workshops on strategic planning and other topics.

Supporting Human Rights Defenders in Nicaragua

To strengthen the capacity of human rights defenders to provide humanitarian assistance to victims of political repression. The organization will train beneficiaries on international human rights protection mechanisms. To build the capacity of democracy activists, they will offer training to help them disseminate content more effectively. The grantee will provide institutional support to Nicaraguan groups in exile to strengthen their pro-democracy efforts.

Women Entrepreneurship for Democracy

Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)


To foster collective action for women entrepreneurs in Nicaragua, and to strengthen the local partner to be the leading business association for women entrepreneurs in the country. The center will foster collective action among women entrepreneurs and conduct direct leadership and business survival training for women business leaders. The center will also help the local partner develop new financial sustainability plans and explore the creation of a regional women entrepreneur network in Central America.
