The project will convene academics and security experts to draft a road map to reform the police system. The document will be presented to pro-democracy groups and encourage them to adopt it as part of their democratic transition plan for Nicaragua. The project will include presentations of the report and articles with its main findings to raise awareness about the topic.

Building the Capacity of Youth on Citizen Participation in Nicaragua

Workshop sessions on issues of human rights, the environment, citizen participation, and rule of law will be organized. A guidebook will be produced and disseminated, and a virtual network will be established to connect participants with likeminded youth in Nicaragua and Latin America.

Defending the Human Rights of Marginalized Communities in Nicaragua

It will also organize a forum with independent media to build visibility on human rights issues. Finally, the organization will prepare a report that documents rights violations and present it before national and international bodies.

Documenting Cases of Violence as a Mechanism to Protect Victims of Human Rights Violations

To strengthen the documentation capacity of Nicaraguan human rights groups as a mechanism to protect victims’ rights. The organization will train members of a coalition of human rights groups to document and analyze the dynamics of violence that took place in two Nicaraguan municipalities during the height of the 2018 political crisis. With the data collected, the organization will produce reports to advocate for a process of transitional justice in Nicaragua.

Fomenting a More Informed Nicaraguan Citizenry through Objective News Reporting

The grantee will professionalize and expand the capacity of a digital media outlet to provide daily coverage on Nicaraguan current events. It will help them to be more responsive and representative of the needs by fostering interaction and communication between them and citizens. Finally, it will generate greater public awareness about the benefits of a peaceful and democratic solution to the political crisis.

Informing Citizens on the Impact of Corruption and Human Rights Violations in Times of Covid-19

The organization will provide legal assistance to citizens facing challenges in accessing the justice system, and accompany victims of rights violations and family members to relevant institutions to help them present complaints. The grantee will consolidate a platform of digital media outlets to foster collaborative journalism and training for its members.

The organization will work with Nicaraguans victims of human rights violations to document their cases and provide them with psychosocial support. It will systematically monitor and report on new cases of torture. To advocate for justice for the victims and promote awareness on these issues, the project will produce and present specialized reports at international forums and disseminate educational materials.

The project will carry out virtual forums to greater promote inclusion and representation of grassroots activists and to strengthen coordination and dialogue amongst different pro-democracy groups. In response to covid-19, it will provide humanitarian assistance to Nicaraguans most at-risk to the pandemic as well as conduct an awareness campaign to inform citizens about the crisis.

The grantee will provide institutional support to Nicaraguan groups in exile to strengthen their pro-democracy efforts.

The center will also help the local partner develop new financial sustainability plans and explore the creation of a regional women entrepreneur network in Central America.
