The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) has supported civil society activists, journalists, and human rights defenders in Ukraine since 1989. On February 24, 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it was not just another news story for NED—it was personal, as the brutal war put our colleagues, grantees, family, and friends at terrible risk.
Despite the danger, our courageous Ukrainian partners have continued their work during the war to document war crimes and atrocities; advocate for international support, mobilize thousands of volunteers across the country; provide independent news, and promote government transparency and accountability. These modern-day heroes epitomize resilience, unity, and strength.
