On Wednesday June 24, the National Endowment for Democracy honored the heroic efforts of Cuban workers, lawyers, and writers working to advance democratic values and fundamental rights within Cuba with the presentation of its annual Democracy Award. The honorees were honored in absentia.

On Tuesday June 22, 2008, the National Endowment for Democracy honored the heroic efforts of Chinese workers, lawyers, and writers working to advance democratic values and fundamental rights within China with the presentation of its annual Democracy Award.
2007 Democracy Award

On Tuesday, September 18, the National Endowment for Democracy honored the courageous efforts of journalists, publishers and press freedom advocates when it presented its annual Democracy Award to three individuals and one organization working to preserve press freedom in Egypt, Russia, Venezuela and Southeast Asia, where authoritarian regimes increasingly seek to silence the voice of independent media. The honorees have shown bravery, determination, and passion as they stand up for journalistic integrity in the face of harassment, censorship, violence, and even death.
2006 Democracy Award
On June 27, the National Endowment for Democracy presented its annual Democracy Award to four democratic activists from Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe, and Sudan.
2005 DEMOCRACY AWARD
On July 13, the National Endowment for Democracy presented its annual Democracy Award to three democratic activists from Afghanistan.
2004 Democracy Award
On June 9, the National Endowment for Democracy honored leaders of organizations known as the backbone of the democracy movement in Russia and the principal bulwark against the return of tyranny.
2003 DEMOCRACY AWARD
On July 16, before giving out the Democracy Award, the NED hosted a day-long conference titled: Gulag, Famine, and Refugees: The Urgent Human Rights Crisis in North Korea.

2001 NED Democracy Award honors a Hero of Human Rights and...

Vicente Fox, the President of Mexico, received the National Endowment for Democracy's 2001 Annual Democracy Award. The NED Board of Directors chose to honor Fox in recognition of his historic election to Mexico's highest office, ending more than seven decades of single-party rule. NED views the honor as a tribute to the people of Mexico for the change they embraced by choosing a new path and working toward a more open and more democratic future for their country.
