Is Democracy Healthy in Latin America?

May 19, 2016
02:00 pm - 04:00 pm

Please join the Americas Society/Council of the Americas, Florida International University, and the National Endowment for Democracy for an engaging, free-flowing, Davos-style conversation on the state of democracy in Latin America.

As Peruvians prepare for presidential elections, Brazilians contemplate presidential impeachment, Haitians face continued electoral postponements, and Venezuela falls into disarray and perhaps ungovernability, among other challenges, our expert panel will explore questions including the following: how healthy is regional democracy in the 21st century? What is the capacity of democratic institutions to deliver positive outcomes? How do efforts to fight corruption fit into the democracy agenda? How can the international community including the Organization of American States and individual nations more effectively support democracy in Latin America where it is challenged? What is the relevance today of the Inter-American Democratic Charter?

Panelists:

• Eric Farnsworth, Vice President, Americas Society/Council of the Americas
• Eduardo Gamarra, Professor of Politics and International Relations, Florida International University
• Miriam Kornblith, Senior Director, Latin America and Caribbean, National Endowment for Democracy
• Cynthia McClintock, Professor of Political Science, Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University
