Marisel Trespalacios will soon join the U.S. Department of Commerce as an International Trade Specialist. She is interested in learning how to promote human rights and democracy through less traditional and more indirect channels such as trade and economic development. She is a recent graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) where she concentrated in Latin American Studies. Prior to SAIS she worked for four years strengthening civil society, promoting citizen participation and fostering media freedom in various Latin American countries. In 2011 she also started along with two friends an NGO called Ágora Cuba to promote social entrepreneurship and civic values in the island.
