Forum Launches New Website on the Authoritarian Resurgence

An array of illiberal forces has built momentum in recent years that is increasingly challenging democratic norms and the international order. Repressive states such as China, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela are at the cutting edge of domestic repression and are increasingly extering influence beyond their borders in ways that are adversely impacting democracy.

To better understand the challenges to democracy posed by these emerging illiberal powers, the International Forum for Democratic Studies launched a new website and blog on “Resurgent Dictatorship: The Global Assault on Democracy.” This website is the product of an ongoing initiative conducted by the Forum which has devoted attention to the leading states that have been at the forefront of the illiberal resurgence, as well as the crucial “soft-power” spheres in which they have been seeking to weaken democracy.
