Vicente Fox, the President of Mexico, received the National Endowment for Democracy's 2001 Annual Democracy Award. The NED Board of Directors chose to honor Fox in recognition of his historic election to Mexico's highest office, ending more than seven decades of single-party rule. Czech and Slovak representatives joined members of Congress, friends of NED, and representatives of the international community on Capitol Hill October 20 to celebrate and reflect on the 10th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution that ended communist rule in Czechoslovakia.
