2018 World Press Freedom Day: KEEPING POWER IN CHECK: MEDIA, JUSTICE AND THE RULE OF LAW

The National Endowment for Democracy is proud to support activists like Rafael Marques de Morais, an Angolan journalist and human rights defender focused on investigating government corruption. His organization, Maka Angola, is a long-time grantee of the NED.  In May 2018, he will face trial again for exposing a shady land deal by former Angolan Attorney General João Maria de Sousa in 2016. If convicted, Rafael faces up to four years and six months in prison.

“The theme of the 2018 celebration highlights the importance of an enabling legal environment for press freedom, and gives special attention to the role of an independent judiciary in ensuring legal guarantees for press freedom and the prosecution of crimes against journalists.” – The United Nations

Head over to CIMA’s site to see the hear the testimonies of three additional press freedom defenders.
