Deon Nelson

Government Affairs Officer, The HALO Trust

Deon works for The HALO Trust, an international humanitarian NGO dedicated to removing landmines and other explosive remnants of war from post- and active-conflict communities. After deployments in Cambodia, Laos, and Somalia, he returned to D.C. in January 2018 to manage Congressional outreach and liaise with the State Department to coordinate roughly two dozen concurrent government grants. Deon is also a doctoral candidate at Catholic University, writing his dissertation on the treatment of political violence in Jürgen Habermas’s discourse ethics. His other research interests are Critical Theory, public sphere discourse, and the just-war tradition. He received his BA from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina and his MA from the University of Virginia.
