Famed Burmese democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) were among those present to pay tribute to Burma’s democracy movement, which was honored with theNational Endowment for Democracy’s 2012 Democracy Award at a Capitol Hill ceremony on Sept. 20.

The 2011 Democracy Awards were accepted by Tunisian activist Jamel Bettaieb and Zahraa Said, sister of murdered businessman Khaled Said, on behalf of all Tunisians and Egyptians who have struggled for a democratic future. William Burns, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, spoke at the ceremony, which as preceded by an experts panel on the continuing struggle for democracy in the Middle East.

On Wednesday June 24, the National Endowment for Democracy honored the heroic efforts of Cuban workers, lawyers, and writers working to advance democratic values and fundamental rights within Cuba with the presentation of its annual Democracy Award. The honorees were honored in absentia.

2007 Democracy Award

On Tuesday, September 18, the National Endowment for Democracy honored the courageous efforts of journalists, publishers and press freedom advocates when it presented its annual Democracy Award to three individuals and one organization working to preserve press freedom in Egypt, Russia, Venezuela and Southeast Asia, where authoritarian regimes increasingly seek to silence the voice of independent media. The honorees have shown bravery, determination, and passion as they stand up for journalistic integrity in the face of harassment, censorship, violence, and even death.
2006 Democracy Award
On June 27, the National Endowment for Democracy presented its annual Democracy Award to four democratic activists from Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe, and Sudan.
