Advocating for a More Transparent, Open and Responsible Haitian Political System

The organization will  consolidate a constitutional reform proposal that could propose an exit to the current political crisis. The organization will disseminate it in the media and to the general population, and hold a series of workshops and talks with political actors, CSOs, government officials and the private sector.

Building Union Capacity to Democratically Represent Workers and Participate in Civic Engagement

To address the challenges that Haitian workers face at the workplace and, more broadly, as citizens impacted by the deepening political and economic crisis, unions must effectively harness worker demand for improved labor and living conditions, strong institutions, and the rule of law. In this context, the center will continue to build the capacity of unions in the garment sector to organize and represent workers at the workplace, as well as to conduct advocacy and foster civic engagement.

To improve the respect for human rights in Haiti, focusing particularly on the National Police; and to document human rights violations and provide legal assistance to victims. The organization will monitor and document human rights abuses carried out during the 2019-2020 cycle of social protests.  The organization will also carry out advocacy efforts directed to the Super Council of the National Police and the General Inspection of the National Police and carry out a series of workshops to build awareness for human rights.

Fostering Accountability and Transparency

To involve civil society in oversight of the government and promote participation in anti-corruption initiatives and activities at the national level, and to increase transparency and accountability by coordinating civil society coalition advocacy efforts. These coalition-building efforts are critical to build consensus and exit the ongoing crisis in Haiti. The organization and its allies will monitor the implementation and progress of government’s plans and measures and promote a pro-transparency and anti-corruption agenda, and advocate for constructive initiatives and solutions.

Fostering Democratic Reforms and Political Participation

To foster government oversight and promote civil society participation in the elaboration of a democratic national agenda; and to promote the adoption of democratic and inclusive public policies. It will  foster collaboration among different civil society actors, academia, and private and public sector elites to draft and advocate for the adoption of democratic and inclusive public policies. The organization will offer a credible democratic and inclusive government agenda and engage with civil society and political actors to support it.

Improving Human Rights in Haiti’s Prison System

Reseau National de Defense des Droits Humains

To improve prison conditions and respect for the rights of prisoners in Haiti’s penitentiary system; and to contribute to a reduction in the number of cases of prolonged pretrial detention in Haiti. The organization will monitor and document conditions within the prison system in Haiti, conduct advocacy for better detention conditions, and push for changes that would bring down the rates of pretrial detention. The organization will also carry out its international advocacy efforts with the UN.

Promoting Reforms and Accountability in the Judiciary

Bureau des Droits Humains en Haiti

To raise public awareness and understanding of judiciary reforms and current shortcomings of the justice system; and to foster new standards of transparency and accountability within the judiciary. The organization will collaborate with the Bar Federation of Haiti to foster best practices with lawyers, judges, prosecutors and other practitioners by organizing workshops and disseminating educational material. The organization will write technical analysis on the dysfunction of the judiciary and lead a communications campaign to raise awareness of these challenges for the public at large. 

Strengthening Collaboration between Municipal Representatives and Youth Leaders

International Republican Institute (IRI)

To strengthen collaboration between municipal representatives and Haitian youth, the Institute will partner with a Haitian social incubator and municipal representatives to provide youth leaders with the skills and opportunities to design and implement innovative projects that address gaps in governance and improve communities. The Institute will also seek to connect these youth leaders with Haitian mentors and members of the diaspora.
