William A. Galston is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, where he holds the Ezra K. Zilkha Chair in the Governance Studies Program. From 1993 to 1995, he served as Deputy Assistant to President Clinton for Domestic Policy, and he has been an advisor to six U.S. presidential campaigns. He is also College Park Professor at the University of Maryland, where formerly he served as Saul Stern Professor and Acting Dean at the School of Public Policy, as well as  director of the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy. During the late 1990s, he was the executive director of the National Commission on Civic Renewal, and later he was the founding director of the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE).

Galston is the author of eight books and more than 100 articles in the fields of political theory, public policy, and American politics. His books include Liberal Purposes: Goods, Virtues, and Diversity in the Liberal State (1991), Liberal Pluralism (2002), and Public Matters: Politics, Policy, and Religion in the 21st Century (2005). His newest book, Anti-Pluralism: The Populist Threat to Liberal Democracy, will be published in March by Yale University Press. A winner of the American Political Science Association’s Hubert H. Humphrey Award, he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004. Galston often has appeared on television, and he is a frequent commentator on NPR. He writes a weekly column for the Wall Street Journal.
